8 Reasons to Attend the MCPA Drive-In Conference

8 Reasons to Attend the MCPA Drive-In Conference

  1. Networking

One of the biggest goals that MCPA has for this conference is to allow for professionals across the state to meet and learn from each other. Opportunities will be created for you to meet new people and reconnect with those you have not seen in a while.

  1. Visit a New Campus

This year, the conference will be held at Newbury College in Brookline, MA. Never been? Take this opportunity to come to campus and see what the quaint New England college has to offer!

  1. Reconnect with MCPA

If you’re a member who hasn’t been able to attend the coffee talks or social events, the Drive-In Conference allows you time to reconnect with the organization and hear a bit about the goals of the organization for the upcoming year. The executive board will be sharing information about the proposed updates to the bylaws, allowing for time to vote, and sharing some information about the upcoming ACPA Convention.

  1. Support the Local Organization

While closely connected to ACPA, MCPA is specifically geared towards those of us across the Commonwealth. Our organization is successful because of the support, mentoring, and learning that happens during the annual Drive-In Conference. Having an in-state conference allows you to get the conference experience during a one-day event.

  1. Talk with the Executive Board About Getting More Involved

If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved with MCPA but don’t quite know how to do that, we’d be happy to talk to you! There are great opportunities for formal (think executive board positions) and informal (we’d love to host a social in your town!) involvement.

  1. Support our Award Winners

MCPA award winners will be announced during the Drive-In Conference. Take a moment to talk with an award winner about their career path, or the spectacular program that won them the award!

  1. Get Your Headshot Taken

How many times have you been asked for a photo of yourself for an article, announcement, or staff list? Is it time to update that Twitter photo? MCPA is offering complimentary headshots for all conference attendees.

  1. Hear from Dr. Cindi Love, the Executive Director of ACPA

Dr. Love will be the keynote speaker for the Drive-In Conference this year. We are so excited to welcome her to our event!

Where are you working right now?

I am a Graduate Fellow for the Office of Disability Services at Suffolk University and I am also a Graduate Resident Assistant for Suffolk at a leased property at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
What do you love about working at Suffolk?

Everyone has been so friendly and supportive from day one. My supervisors not only care about my work, but also my academics and professional development.

When you aren’t working, how do you spend your free time?

Since I am new to Boston, I have exploring the museums, outdoor public spaces, and the variety of restaurants while I have been here. I also enjoy reading in my free time.

What is your favorite grad school class and why?

I would have to say I enjoy Legal Aspects of Higher Education the most right now. The professor is well versed in the subject and we learn by looking at cases in higher education history that have set the precedent.

Who inspired you to get involved in Higher Education?

The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Hartford was the first to inspire me. The whole Division of Student Affairs at the University of Hartford also took me under their wing and supported me while I was there.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your career (so far)?

Having a mentor to help you along the way is the greatest gift.

What is on your Higher Ed bucket list?

  • Apply and be hired for a NODA Internship Summer 2016
  • Present at NASPA Regional and National
  • Speak at a TED conference on an aspect of higher education
  • Find a way to use my studies in architectural engineering and higher education at the same time.

What advice would you offer to undergraduate seniors who are starting to search for grad programs?

Trust in yourself that you will make the right decision.

What is your current position at Assumption College?

Vice President for Student Affairs

What do you love about working at Assumption College?

I get asked that question a lot and it’s difficult to answer because there are so many things I love about my work. If I had to pick one thing it would fall under the category of community. Friendship is a central component of our founding order, the Augustinians of the Assumption, and the culture of friendship permeates our community. Our alumni stay very connected to each other and to those of us who knew them as students.

When you aren’t working, how do you spend your free time?

I’m an Equestrian so I spend a lot of my free time with my horse at the barn. I am also certified to teach Paddle Boarding and spend time on the water in the summer. Both of these hobbies find their way into my life at the College. I’m the advisor to the Equestrian Team and I take student leaders out paddling during Leadership Training. Lots of blurred boundaries in the work of student affairs, and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Who inspired you to get involved in Higher Education?

I was a student leader as an undergraduate and interacted with some wonderful student affairs professionals. I was a Speech Pathology major but I found my calling through my RA experience and leadership training. I was introduced to the literature in the field and read everything I could get my hands on related to student development theory. I was greatly inspired by the work of Arthur Chickering, who continues to be one of the most prolific writers and revered scholars in the field.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your career (so far)?

I rely heavily on active listening and try to be aware that my own lived experience as a white woman from a blue collar family informs every conversation. There is much to be learned from acknowledging our differences and to seek ways to understand others’ perspectives. We all become smarter in the process. I work on this goal every day!

What is on your Higher Ed bucket list?

I think I would enjoy working at a university in a different country with a completely different approach to student affairs. It would be fascinating and I’m the adventurous type. I’ve considered some of these opportunities in the past, but the timing wasn’t right. If it were to happen that would be great, but I have no complaints. I’ve lived an incredibly blessed life.

What advice would you offer to new professionals who are starting their first professional position?

Stay in your first position at least two years, three if possible. Never underestimate the importance of networking. Join a professional organization and look for opportunities to volunteer at a regional conference. Read, read, read. There are so many great journals like The Journal of Student Development and The Journal of Higher Education that help you become better acquainted with current national issues in higher education. Best practices in the field of student affairs are ever-changing so be willing to learn new tricks!

Welcome to MCPA

On behalf of the Massachusetts College Personnel Association (MCPA) I want to thank you for your membership in the organization.  Last week I had the pleasure of sitting on an alumni panel for Careers in Student Affairs Month, and one thing that I was able to reflect on while I was visiting Bridgewater State is that one constant we have in this field is change.

As Student Affairs professionals we work with change constantly and I think we handle it pretty well.  Today, I am excited to tell you about a few great changes coming to MCPA this year and to announce some proposed changes
